Hockey Mama for Obama

Got to see Barack Obama downtown today.  A woman said to me “You’re beaming!” and I grinned at her stupidly.  Yes, I am BEAMING.  I’m beaming because Barak Obama is smart and eloquent and speaks to my concerns.  I’m beaming because Calder Plaza was full of all kinds of people who felt the same way and who love our country and want to see it cared for with vision and integrity and sacrifice.  I’m beaming because I LOVE citizenship.  I love that we can rally and question and argue and vote.  All without getting shot.

On the subject of citizenship, Karl just got back from his annual GeekFest in Boston [programmin’ with his homies] and showed me this cool tool one of his posse made using my favorite JavaScript framework, JQuery.  Check it out at http://maps.google.com/vote.  If anyone you know isn’t registered to vote, introduce them to our great American privilege by showing them this website.

Props to my dear friend David LaGrand who hooked me up with a vhl pass to this event.  I imagine my experience today was much like flying first class:  skip the line of thousands, be whisked by usher straight to the front, and settle in to your capacious seating — or in this case, piece of fence upon which to lean.  So much for democracy.

    Hey Steve,
Wish you could have been next to me!! David was given a few of these passes because he is a City Commissioner. He gave one to his son Isaac who has helped him slavishly on both his campaigns, one to Isaac’s Japanese exchange student [Welcome to America Masato!], and one to me, ostensibly because I helped him so much on his Senate campaign, although I know he was just being a generous friend. Someone said to me today in reference to these passes, “well, I guess money talks.” But I have to say that most of the people there were wearing volunteer passes, which means they’ve been working for the campaign already. And I’ll be working for the campaign after today. My friend Kathleen who threatens to bleed internally on behalf of this cause, said I could phone, walk, or data-enter. I’ll be data-entering because frankly, I lack courage. But I do have hope! 🙂

WOW! You look so cute with the sign! I’m excited because he is coming to speak at Abington High School tomorrow! Unfortunately it’s at 3:00 and I will still be in the classroom!

  7. Ah, dear niece, I’ve bookmarked your site. Love it! Your children are some of my favorite squirrels.

Uncle Fred and I were part of the happy throng in Calder Plaza. We rode the bus downtown and as we were walking toward the LONG LINE, we saw some people with a camera across from the MVP Health club and 3 dude on walkie talkies in an SUV- we joined the camera folks on that side of the street, looked up to the second floor and by gum, there was Barack on a treadmill. Very cool, since I couldn’t see him from where we were in the happy throng. It was a wonderful and varied crowd. How exciting. I hope he’s our next Prez.
