I visited the Soviet Union with my parents on a vacation (!) in 1986 so have a personal interest in knowing what it’s like today. Former NPR reporter Anne Garrels brilliantly organizes her book into chapters on various topics, like sexuality, human rights, religion, special needs children, and so on and shares the depth and particularity of all her years reporting there in the accessible and inviting way that a good radio story can do as well. What I didn’t expect is the frightening parallels between what is happening politically in Russia and what I see rising in the United States. A most excellent book. Captivating read and definitely for any reader.
