Novel about hard-driving divorce attorney Paula Vauss, or Kali, as her Southern born, free-spirited mother Kai named her. At 13, Kali turns her mother in to the police precipitating a lifelong estrangement. Years later, Paula discovers the things she didn’t know about that time her life, including a brother and a sister. I really liked this author’s voice: sassy, smart-alecky, smart. The story was layered and touching. So I can’t really explain why the heart of the characters or the story didn’t sink in deep. I think maybe the voice got in the way.
