Skip Cuddy, ex-con and caretaker of the Blessings estate, find a baby abandoned at the stairs to his garage apartment. He discovers a new self when assumes her parenting and Lydia Blessing, recluse owner of the estate, discovers herself anew as she becomes his accomplice. This book is a sort of simple domestic drama that I remember loving from the 90s. Deceptive, of course, because Anna Quindlen is a kick-ass brilliant writer and this book isn’t really so simple.
