What a gamut of emotions this book provoked in me: disgust, horror, contempt, compassion, understanding, admiration. J.D. Vance calls himself a hillbilly and attempts through memoir to circumscribe his “people” and why they are who they are and think what they think. I feel skeptical about one person’s experience speaking for many but Vance is a erudite thinker and writer with an easy-to-style.
