I’ve been reading a lot of nonfiction about LGBT Christians lately but this is the first YA novel I read about a young woman’s adolescence and coming out. Things I liked: the main character seemed real and consistent, Danforth has an eye for small details and beautiful moments in nature, the author’s portrayal of an orientation-change camp seemed authentic and honestly drawn. Things I didn’t like: too long; the protaganist’s parents die (sorry, spoiler! but it’s early on in the book) and I thought that complicated the main conflict. For me, this book was clearly about a young woman exploring and coming to terms with being a lesbian; her also being an orphan just muddied the novelistic waters. Still, glad I read it.
