Science fiction romance. Archetype by M.D. Waters. I think I might have read a blurb about this in People Magazine. Don’t laugh! They usually don’t steer me wrong. That last Quindlen book ROCKED. This one? Meh. Very cool concept: the US has undergone a civil war and been torn in half, east and west. In the west, women are free. In the east, they are loaded into farms and sold as wives after reprogramming. Emma is a resistance leader caught in a raid who is reprogrammed as the wife of Declan Burke, CEO of the farms. But her memories haven’t been totally erased and her life with her real husband haunts her. The writing? I couldn’t write it but that doesn’t mean I need to say I think it’s good. I didn’t. Is there some weird editing program that doesn’t understand contractions? Why do so many books I read have such stilted language. I think there might be a computer program editing these things.
