Why did I let this book sit on a table for so long after buying it for 10 cents (10 CENTS!) at the library’s used book sale. I was desperate for a swift narrative with depth and DUH, Jeannette Walls delivered and I apologize to her for not realizing that sooner. Of course she would. Bean and her sister Liz take a Greyhound from Lost Lake, California to Byler, Virginia when their mother disappears again, this time for more than a few days. Bean discovers her past in Byler, finds her aunt and uncle and cousins, learns about the father she never knew, and takes a stand for Liz when things go wrong with the evil Jerry Maddox. Thank you, Ms. Walls, for the ending. I was so hoping for it and it brought a smile to my face, and I’m not proud of that but it’s so.
