Someday My Prince Will Come

Someday My Prince Will Come: True Adventures of a Wannabe Princess is the true story of Jerramy (she’s a girl) Fine’s lifelong obsession with becoming a princess.  If this book were just royal -watching and Diana-worshipping (and it is some of that) it would be too insipid to read.  But Fine is smart and has […]

Beatrice and Virgil

Whew.  Wrung out from reading this.  I would not have finished it if it hadn’t been recommended to me.  I found it circular and exhausting.  Yann Martel tells the story of a successful writer whose flip-book about the Holocaust is rejected by his publisher.  He gives up writing and moves to another city where he […]

Midnighters Blue Noon

Third in the Midnighters series.  #2 and #3 hard to read.  Bummer series ending.  The Uglies series is much more engaging.

Faith

Wonderful, layered, unpredictable, kind novel about a priest who is accused of molesting a child.  Don’t let that put you off.  Characters you care about and complicated, messy, true relationships.  Will find more written by her.  I love reading a well-told tale that makes me think and feel without telling me to think and feel.

The Midnighters #1: The Secret Hour

Westerfeld wrote the Pretties/Uglies/Specials series that I loved so long ago.  Here’s another fantasy series that is young adult book-candy.  Didn’t love it as much as the other series, but have the second one already and will pass the first on to Ben.  What is UP with that book cover?  Book designers, unite!!  Rise up […]

Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie

Oh, why does my handy-dandy Amazon widgit give me this cover to show you?  Find Marijka Kostiw’s kickin’ orange and black 60’s mod cover.  Now THAT’S a great book cover.  Read this book as a preview for possibly handing it to Ben.  I’m not sure he’ll love it b/c it is strictly realistic fiction and […]
