Tallgrass

May’s Book Club book. Small town in Colorado becomes home to Japanese internment camp during World War II. Told from the point of view of a young girl in the town. I liked her family (they were warm and loving and funny and her Dad, Loyal, was aptly named. He reminded me of Atticus Finch) […]

Six Years

Six Years I love Coben. They’re not very thick on intrigue or detail — just a thriller plot and a great protagonist. Jake Fischer loses Natalie, the love of his life when she abruptly decides to marry someone else. But when Fischer sees the husband’s obituary six years later and realizes that he wasn’t married […]

With or Without You

With or Without You: A Memoir written by Domenica Ruta. Very sad tale of Ruta’s childhood with a crazy, drug-addicted, narcissistic mother. Not as gruesome in detail as other memoirs of this sort I’ve read. Also not as insightful as other stories of finding sobriety. Nothing beats Drinking: A Love Story on that one.

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel by Robin Sloan. Natalie’s suggestion for April book club. Loved it! I read it in the 2 days before our meeting so I would be ready to discuss it, but we will NEVER all read a book so the discussions go nowhere. Good thing I loved this book for […]

Where Have You Gone Bernadette?

Where’d You Go, Bernadette: A Novel by Maria Semple. Loved this book! Baladkrishna Fox (Bee) and her mother Bernadette and her father Elgin live in Seattle. Their lives unravel and this book is Bee’s reknitting of all the facts through emails, faxes, letters — all documents that tell the story of this happy/unhappy family. Ms. […]

Calling All Invisible Women

Calling Invisible Women: A Novel by New York Times bestselling author Jeanne Ray who, more notably to me, is the mother of Ann Patchett! The conceit of this book, that a woman wakes up to find herself invisible and her husband doesn’t notice, was too confusing for me. I kept questioning the particulars and that […]
